Cashmere feels soft and lightweight, but its fine fibers can lose shape, shrink, or develop excess pilling when exposed to hot water, harsh detergent, or aggressive rubbing.
Hand washing gives you more control than an ordinary washing cycle. The process is simple, but the garment should be handled gently from the moment it enters the water until it is completely dry.
Always check the care label first. Structured cashmere coats, lined garments, or pieces with leather and decorative components may require professional cleaning.
Choose a clean sink, wash basin, or container large enough for the cashmere item to move freely without being folded tightly.
Remove soap residue, makeup, toothpaste, cleaning chemicals, and dirt before filling the basin.
A smooth Quartz Wash Basin can provide a spacious surface for delicate hand washing, but it should still be rinsed carefully before the garment is placed inside.
Fill the basin with cool or slightly lukewarm water. Hot water may encourage shrinkage and distortion.
Add a small amount of detergent designed for wool, cashmere, or delicate fabrics. Avoid bleach, strong stain removers, and heavily alkaline cleaners.
Turn the garment inside out and place it into the prepared water.
Press the cashmere gently beneath the surface until the fibers are evenly wet.
Move it slowly through the water with your hands. Do not scrub the fabric against itself or use a brush, because friction can increase fuzzing and pilling.
Let the garment soak for approximately ten minutes unless its care instructions recommend another period.
A longer soak does not necessarily produce a cleaner result. Extended exposure may make the wet garment heavier and more difficult to handle without stretching.
Drain the washing water while supporting the garment with both hands.
Refill the basin with clean, cool water and gently press the cashmere until the detergent is removed. Repeat when necessary.
Twisting wet cashmere can pull the fibers out of shape.
Instead, press the garment gently against the side or bottom of the basin to remove part of the water.
Place the garment flat on a clean, dry towel and reshape the shoulders, sleeves, and hem.
Roll the towel with the garment inside, then press lightly so the towel absorbs excess moisture. Unroll it carefully without pulling the fabric.
Lay the cashmere on a dry towel or a flat mesh drying rack in a ventilated area.
Do not place cashmere in a tumble dryer or directly beside a radiator, heater, or strong sunlight.
Avoid hanging the wet garment because the water weight may stretch the shoulders and sleeves.
Check the garment while it dries and return it gently to its original dimensions.
Wait until it is completely dry before folding or storing it.
A basin used for hand washing should provide enough room to support the garment without forcing it into a small, crowded space.
A smooth surface is also easier to inspect and rinse before use. Chips, rough edges, exposed fittings, or dirty overflow areas may catch fine fibers or transfer residue.
